The main advantage of ammonium acetate is the ability to maintain neutral pH values (about 7.0) in aqueous solutions. Such conditions are optimal for many biomolecules that degrade or ionize poorly in acidic environments. At the same time, the salt is completely volatile: it evaporates in the ion source of the mass spectrometer, without leaving non-volatile deposits and without polluting the mass analyzer. This property is critically important for long-term analytical series without instrument maintenance. The product is characterized by an exceptionally low content of metallic impurities. According to the certificates of analysis, the concentrations of sodium and calcium do not exceed 50 parts per billion, potassium and aluminum — 20 parts per billion, iron, magnesium, zinc — 10 parts per billion. Most metals are at a level of less than 1 part per billion. Such low metal levels prevent the formation of metal adducts in the mass spectra, simplifying the identification of compounds. The impurities of chlorides and nitrates are controlled at the level of 0.0001–0.001 percent. The reagent consists of white crystals with the possible presence of lumps, well soluble in water. The purity of the product is 99-100.4 percent in terms of dry matter, the residue after calcination does not exceed 0.001–0.01 percent, the water content is 0.8–0.9 percent. Each batch is tested for suitability for gradient LC-MS methods, which confirms the absence of background pollutants capable of creating false peaks.
