Agilent 5977 Gas mass-spectrometry
The Agilent 5977 mass-selective detector is a single-quadrupole system for gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MSD) available in several configurations: the 5977A, 5977B, and 5977C. The instrument is designed for laboratories performing quantitative and qualitative analysis in sectors such as environmental monitoring, the food industry, petrochemistry, pharmaceuticals, forensics, and materials testing. A key feature of the system is the wide range of ion sources available to suit various analytical applications. The standard stainless-steel EI (electron ionization) version ensures stable performance for applications with moderate sensitivity requirements. The Inert Plus model features an extraction lens that enhances sensitivity when analyzing active compounds. The EI/CI version supports both electron ionization and chemical ionization, enabling the determination of compound molecular weights. The flagship model, equipped with the High Efficiency Source (HES), delivers unprecedented sensitivity, achieving an instrument detection limit of 1.5 femtograms. The latest 5977C version incorporates the new HydroInert source, optimized for operation with hydrogen as the carrier gas. This is particularly relevant given the current shortage and high cost of helium. The JetClean technology—a self-cleaning ion source—significantly reduces or entirely eliminates the need for manual cleaning, thereby increasing instrument uptime by up to two additional days per month. The quadrupole mass analyzer features a monolithic, gold-plated design and is heated to temperatures of up to 200°C, preventing contaminant buildup during the analysis of high-boiling-point compounds. The detectable mass range spans from 1.6 to 1,050 atomic mass units. A three-axis detector with an electron multiplier ensures the suppression of neutral particle noise and delivers a high signal-to-noise ratio. The system is compatible with Agilent 7890, 8860, 8890, and Intuvo 9000 series gas chromatographs. Operation is managed via MassHunter software, which handles data acquisition, chromatographic peak deconvolution, spectral library searching (NIST, Wiley), and quantitative analysis. ChemStation software is also available for users accustomed to the classic interface. The instrument is compatible with various sample introduction systems, including Agilent 7693 and 7650 autosamplers, the 7697 headspace sampler, and third-party devices. Capillary Flow Technology enables column backflushing, which reduces analysis time and extends the service life of the chromatographic column. The 5977C system holds the ACT (My Green Lab) eco-label, confirming transparency regarding its environmental impact.
