The Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Exploris GC mass spectrometric system is a high-resolution gas chromatography instrument that combines the sensitivity of a triple quadrupole with the analytical capabilities of an orbital mass analyzer. The equipment is available in two versions: the basic version and the flagship model 240. The device is designed for laboratories performing complex research and analytical tasks in the field of food safety, environmental monitoring, metabolomics, petrochemicals and pharmaceuticals. The heart of the system is a high-field orbital mass analyzer operating in vacuum and detecting ions by their rotational frequency around the central electrode. The older model reaches a resolution of 240,000, which makes it possible to distinguish compounds with almost the same molecular weight. The basic version offers a choice of 30,000 or 60,000 resolution. At the same time, the sensitivity of the system is maintained at all resolution levels, which is important for ultra-consistent analysis. The accuracy of mass determination with internal calibration is less than one millionth. Multi-stage ion optics are implemented in the design. An advanced quadrupole selects precursors with an isolation window width of 0.4 atomic mass units. The advanced axial gradient ion leash prevents neutral particles from entering the analyzer, reducing background noise. The C-shaped trap ensures precise injection of ions into the orbital cell. The ExtractaBrite ion source supports both electronic and chemical ionization, including positive and negative ion modes. Changing the mode or cleaning the source is performed without resetting the vacuum in the system. The detection limit of the device is 6 femtograms of octafluoroaphthalene with eight consecutive injections. The signal-to-noise ratio of 100 femtograms of octafluoroaphthalene exceeds 10,000 to one. The dynamic range of the system is more than 5,000 in a single spectrum, which allows simultaneous detection of components in a wide range of concentrations. The range of registered masses ranges from 30 to 3000 atomic mass units. The scanning speed reaches 40 measurements per second at a resolution of 7,500. The software includes the TraceFinder and Compound Discoverer packages. TraceFinder is designed for targeted and non-targeted screening using NIST, Wiley, or custom high-resolution spectrum libraries. Compound Discoverer is used for in-depth data processing in metabolomics and non-targeted analysis. The automatic adjustment and calibration function ensures that the system is ready for operation within a few minutes. The template method and automated workflows make the device accessible to operators with different levels of training. The system is compatible with Thermo Scientific TRACE 1300 and TRACE 1600 series gas chromatographs, as well as with TriPlus RSH SMART, TriPlus 500 HS and AI/AS 1610 autosamplers.
